Is training necessary to operate a Blueye ROV?

Monday, February 24, 2025 / The Blueye office

We often get asked whether training is necessary to operate or become a Blueye ROV pilot. In this article, we explore how our training sessions can be beneficial and whether taking an ROV course is essential for becoming a skilled pilot.

Many people who inquire about or operate ROVs have experience working in or around water—whether as divers, in the maritime industry, or simply out of interest in underwater exploration. Today, advanced machines take on complex underwater tasks, from searching in low-visibility conditions to navigating strong currents. In these situations, having an ROV is invaluable, but operating one effectively requires more than just interest. Practical knowledge and strong maneuvering skills are essential for safely and efficiently handling an ROV in challenging environments.

Why training matters for ROV pilots

Blueye ROVs are compact and user-friendly compared to larger industrial ROVs, making them accessible to a wide range of users. However, training with Blueye experts provides valuable skills for handling more complex scenarios. For example, when operating ROVs integrated with acoustic positioning systems or sonars, proper training ensures accurate data interpretation. Pilots may also be required to deploy, recover, and safely operate ROV, particularly in demanding environments.

In industries like offshore inspections, skilled maneuvering is essential. Training helps pilots navigate safely through complex structures, such as leg platforms, fixed platforms, and wellheads, minimizing risk to infrastructure. Additionally, pilots learn basic maintenance and rigging preparation to ensure the ROV is inspection ready.

Blueye Academy: Free ROV courses

To help users get the most out of their ROVs, we offer training led by experienced pilots. While the Blueye ROVs are designed for ease of use, our courses provide deeper insights into efficient operation, maintenance, and real-world applications.

Beyond operation, ROV courses covers post-processing tools like reporting and file transfer, as well as troubleshooting common issues during operations, ensuring smooth and efficient performance in the field. Recognizing these challenges, Blueye offers training programs designed to enhance user skills and confidence in operating ROVs

We offer both physical and online courses tailored to different needs:

  • Physical course (Trondheim HQ): A full-day, hands-on session covering technical basics, underwater task execution, and maintenance.
  • Online course: A 2-hour interactive session focused on ROV operation, troubleshooting, and Q&A.
  • Private course: If your company or a larger group needs a more specialized course, we can arrange a private course tailored to your needs. We can also hold the course at your location (within Norway). These courses have a fixed fee in addition to covering any travel costs. Contact us for more info.

It was a rich course with some theory and practical ROV flying, I think the threshold for using the equipment is now lower than before we took the course.

Do you need training to operate Blueye ROV?

As mentioned earlier, the Blueye ROVs — X1, Pro, and X3 — are all designed for easy and intuitive use. While formal training isn’t required to operate an ROV, it can be beneficial to gain a better understanding and hands-on experience with the equipment.

With user-friendly apps for controlling the ROV and access to the Blueye Help Center, which offers support articles, user manuals, and video tutorials, most users can get started without extensive training.

Taking part in a training course can be a valuable investment for those looking to improve their skills. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced ROV pilot, the right training can make a big difference. It’s not just about learning to maneuver an underwater drone—it’s also about understanding how to make the most of the equipment for your specific needs. With our free training course, we want to make it easier for you to get the most out of your Blueye ROV, whether you're using it for inspections, research, or other maritime tasks.
